About art therapy

What is art therapy and how is it different from regular therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process — drawing, painting, collage, clay, and more — as a primary way of expressing and exploring emotion. Unlike traditional talk therapy, art therapy doesn't require you to find the right words. The art-making itself becomes a language. I am trained as both a licensed therapist and a board-certified art therapist, so sessions integrate clinical depth with creative practice.

Do I need to be artistic or know how to draw?

Not at all. Artistic skill is never the point — expression is. Many clients come in saying "I can't draw" and discover that's exactly what makes the process so freeing. We work with what you bring, not what you think you should be able to make.

What happens in a typical session?

Every session is different and tailored to you. We might begin with a check-in conversation, move into an art-making activity, and then reflect together on what came up. Some sessions are more verbal, others more image-based — we follow your pace and needs.

What materials do we use?

Materials vary depending on the session and what feels right for you. We might work with drawing, painting, collage, clay, ink, or found objects. Part of the therapeutic process is also exploring how different materials feel in your hands — some are controlled, some unpredictable, and that itself can be meaningful.

How much does a session cost?

Sessions are offered on a sliding scale based on financial need. I believe cost should not be a barrier to care. Please reach out to discuss what works for you — I'm happy to find something that fits your situation.

How long is each session?

Individual sessions are typically 60 minutes. Workshop and group formats vary in length.

Do you offer in-person or online sessions?

Both. I offer in-person and online sessions, available in English and Mandarin.

Getting started

How do I know if art therapy is right for me?

If you're curious, that's enough. Art therapy can be helpful for anyone navigating stress, grief, anxiety, trauma, identity, or simply a sense that something feels stuck. You don't need a diagnosis or a crisis — many people come simply wanting to understand themselves better.

What should I expect in the first session?

The first session is mostly a conversation — a chance for us to get to know each other, for you to share what brings you in, and for me to explain how I work. There's no pressure to make art right away. We move at your pace.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. I offer a free 15-minute introductory call so we can see if we're a good fit before committing to anything. There's no obligation — just a conversation.

For specific clients

Do you work with children, families, or couples?

Yes. I work with individuals, families, and couples. Art therapy can be especially powerful for children and adolescents who may find it easier to express themselves through images than words.

Do you work with people who don't speak English fluently?

Yes — I offer fully bilingual sessions in English and Mandarin (國語). You're welcome to move between languages as feels natural.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. Everything shared in sessions is confidential, in accordance with professional ethical standards and applicable law. I will explain the specific limits of confidentiality during our first session.
